Approval Document No. Letter Wei Bu Jiu Zi No. 1081370393: Approved for Implementation

Project Goals

To bring warmth and laughter to more children, family members, and healthcare teams; increase the number of performances by professional caring clowns stationed at hospitals over the long term; cultivate local young people willing to engage in service; organize educational promotion activities such as international exchanges; connect the performing arts and healthcare platforms; influence more professional service providers; and thereby promote the development of friendly healthcare in Taiwan.

Overview of the Use of Funds Raised

This activity solicited donations from the general public and raised NT$6,861,322 plus NT$408 in interest, for a total of NT$6,861,730. After deducting NT$680,270 in necessary expenses for the fundraising activity, NT$3,542,508 in hospital service performance expenses, and NT$880,761 in talent cultivation and promotion expenses, the remaining amount after use of the fundraising proceeds was NT$1,758,191. With the approval of the Ministry of Health and Welfare in Letter Wei Bu Jiu Zi No. 1081370393 dated December 25, 2019, the deadline for using the remaining funds was extended to December 31, 2020.

1. Hospital Service Performances

In addition to maintaining the existing performances at hospitals where we are stationed, regular weekly performances were added at the 8th-floor intensive care unit and 12th-floor general ward of National Taiwan University Children’s Hospital, as well as at the day care center, adult respiratory intensive care unit, and geriatric ward of Taipei Veterans General Hospital. The total number of people served was 50,290. To maintain the highest appropriate quality of hospital performances, a total of 47 group discussions and continuing education training sessions were arranged for active performers, along with 21 instances of professional psychological counseling and 56 evaluation and assessment sessions.

2. Talent Cultivation and Promotion

(1) Recruitment and training of new performers: Recruitment and training of performers in Taichung and Taipei began in 2018. From nearly 100 applicants, 11 trainees were selected. After nearly 140 hours of intensive courses and two stages of observational internships at hospitals, five passed the selection process and officially began performing at hospitals in January 2019.

(2) International exchange: In 2018, three senior French caring clown trainers specializing in companionship performances for hospice care and infants and young children were invited to Taiwan. In addition to arranging courses to train and guide Taiwanese caring clowns, promotional lectures and workshops were held in Taipei and Kaohsiung, with a total participation of 302 person-visits. In 2019, the Association invited a senior French caring clown trainer specializing in companionship performances for older adults and children with multiple disabilities to Taiwan to share experiences, and arranged training to guide Taiwanese caring clowns in companionship performance techniques for older adults with dementia, disabilities, and other difficulties. The activity had 30 participants.

(3) Domestic education promotion: To convey warmth and strength to more children, family members, and healthcare teams in need, beginning in 2019, one-time touring performances were held in pediatric wards, intensive care units, and other departments of hospitals in counties and cities where we are not stationed. Lectures and workshops for healthcare personnel were also arranged to promote and share the importance of child-friendly healthcare. In total, hospitals in six counties and cities—Yilan, Changhua, Tainan, Pingtung, Taitung, and Hualien—were visited, providing ward performances to 329 people and healthcare promotion activities to 436 participants.
