In the second half of 2022, Dr. Red Nose received an unusual request: could they visit the home of a three-year-old girl with a rare disease to tell her stories?
After much discussion, we decided to take on the task. This was not merely a storytelling service, but also a way to bring Medical Clown’ performances into the homes of children with rare diseases, offering them emotional healing. After six months of preparation, including staff scheduling, discussions about the performance content, education and training, and service process planning, we finally launched our first performance at the end of the year. Dr. Red Nose entered the little girl’s home to provide a performance and companionship designed especially for her. The living room seemed to have been enchanted, becoming an imaginary world exclusively for the child. Through play, music, improvisation, and interaction with the child, we helped enhance her social development and bring her positive emotions—laughter and happiness.
After a year of uninterrupted performances, with clown time taking place every two weeks, Dr. Red Nose, the children, their parents, and our sponsoring partners have never given up and have continued bringing laughter to the children. At present, the home service primarily operates in the Tainan area, with hopes of expanding throughout Taiwan in the future and bringing art and laughter into the homes of all children with rare diseases—everyone has the right to experience art and play, and this right should not be deprived because of illness, age, or physical or mental condition. Let laughter and art soothe every heart.
The daily lives of families of people with rare diseases mostly revolve around traveling between home and medical institutions. Parents have little opportunity, and often lack the support or assistance needed, to take their children out on their own. They cannot freely use public services such as park playground equipment, libraries, and community childcare centers—children have almost no opportunity to encounter people or things beyond their families and medical teams, making their lives extremely isolated.-
Dr. Red Nose design story theaters, improvisational theater performances, and interactive shows for children and their parents. We provide young patients with an appropriate pace for receiving information and art services tailored specifically to them, giving them more stimulation to experience the world and more opportunities to interact with others. At the same time, we help soothe the heavy emotions and stress parents bear from providing long-term care.
