Dr. Red Nose’s Diary – Support That Never Stops

An-An (pseudonym ) first met Dr. Red Nose at age 6 when he was hospitalized for epilepsy. At the time, it was through a video call. Because the surgery had affected his language area, the shy boy did not talk much and simply gazed quietly at the clown on the other side of the screen. As the number of interactions increased, An-An gradually began to smile whenever he saw Dr. Red Nose. Although he could only watch them through a phone, he enjoyed playing games with them. These clumsy yet amusing clowns were his best friends in the hospital, because he knew that no matter what, he could be completely free to be himself in front of the clowns.

Although An-An’s physical condition recovered quickly, he was afraid of being discharged, worried that once he left the hospital, the epilepsy would return and prevent him from living a normal life. In addition, returning to school was bound to be challenging, because the brain injury had slowed An-An’s reactions, and learning was more difficult for him than for his classmates.

However, Dr. Red Nose continued to accompany An-An. Through information shared by his mother, they continued to send him personalized video performances every week, accompanying him as he did math, practiced basketball shots, and sang, together fighting epilepsy, that little monster.

The experience of interacting with Dr. Red Nose gave An-An confidence and encouraged him to take the initiative to make friends with his classmates. His mother said, “Thank you, Dr. Red Nose, for incorporating An-An’s life into the performances and making his world more interesting!”
