Exaggerated shouts rang out from the treatment room, breaking the hospital’s tranquility. The medical staff looked up—not in alarm, but with knowing smiles appearing on their faces in unison. Then they heard the child burst into laughter from the treatment room.
This is the daily work of Dr. Red Nose’ Medical Accompaniment Team. Unlike the team structure for ward performances, this is a team specially dedicated to working alongside medical staff and accompanying children as they undergo treatment.
When the Medical Clown come to the ward to greet the children, the children actually know that they are going for treatment. But because they see the clowns’ absurd, amusing performances and interactions, their attention is diverted, their expressions relax considerably, and they temporarily forget their nervousness.
With the clowns by their side, children seem truly able to grow a little braver: in addition to having their mom and dad beside them, they also have two extra funny, clumsy super cheerleaders who constantly radiate positive energy, completely transforming the frightening impression of “going for treatment.”
A 4-year-old child was so focused on watching a clown pick their nose while getting an injection and having blood drawn that they did not notice the pain at all. The treatment quietly came to an end just like that, as if nothing had happened. It is also wonderful to work with nurses who really enjoy watching clown performances. They can always catch the rhythm of the clowns’ games and interactions, remind the children at just the right moment to watch the clowns’ most精彩片刻, and then complete the procedure quickly, decisively, and precisely at that moment.
Just as the nurses often explain to the children: “Because you have to get an injection, if you are scared, the clown will come and give you courage!”
Hospitals with clowns in them really do seem pretty great, don’t they? A relaxed, humorous atmosphere fills the place, making it seem as though any difficulty can be overcome 😊
