Dr. Red Nose 2025 Annual Report

2025 Annual Report

Red Nose Clown Care Association

Ten years of laughter is not a miracle;
it is built by every person who walks into the wards each week.

Where We Went This Year

In 2025, Dr. Red Nose continued to visit 15 partner hospitals and 3 care facilities across Taiwan. Through more than 1,600 healing visits and 20,000 smile prescriptions, we accompanied many patients, family members, and healthcare workers through vulnerable moments in their medical journeys.

Behind every visit to the field are many people quietly contributing—from the professional training of medical clowns and the team’s ongoing learning, to the public-interest partners and donors who support the organization’s operations. Together, they build the enduring power of this companionship.

About Dr. Red Nose

In 2015, founder Ma Chao-chi and Luc Ducros (Ku Le-hsi) put on their makeup, brought their instruments, and entered the wards of National Taiwan University Children’s Hospital for the first time. That day marked the beginning of Dr. Red Nose’ presence in Taiwan’s healthcare system.

Dr. Red Nose is Taiwan’s only medical clown organization. We bring together performing artists who have received professional training for healthcare settings and enter medical and care institutions. Through humorous improvisational interactions, we accompany patients, family members, and healthcare workers through stressful and vulnerable moments, bringing them laughter and healing.

Professionalism

Continuously advance our artistic and medical clowning expertise, maintaining high-quality and trustworthy services.

Respect

Meet one another with equality and sincerity, safeguarding the dignity and choices of every person during vulnerable moments.

Integrity

Uphold transparent, honest, and responsible organizational operations, cherishing the trust placed in us by the public.

Healing

We believe that humor, play, and art have the power to connect people and accompany them through difficult moments.

Medical Clowns

Medical clowns are performing artists who have received professional training. Our work is not limited to performing; through the art of clowning, we accompany patients, family members, and healthcare workers with humorous improvisational interactions, music, and games, providing non-pharmacological psychosocial support.

Teams of Two

We enter the wards in pairs, using real-time responses and collaborative rapport to create more flexible and nuanced companionship.

Regular Frequency

Stable and long-term regular visits allow patients, family members, and healthcare workers to build familiarity and trusting relationships.

Improvisational Interaction

We improvise according to the situation on site, age-related needs, and emotional atmosphere, responding to what each person we serve truly needs in the moment.

Talent Development

Professionalism is our strongest foundation. Every Dr. Red Nose must undergo extensive professional performance training, learn medical knowledge, and complete internships in healthcare settings. They must also follow professional standards and ethical guidelines for medical clowns before officially beginning ward service.

In 2025, the northern region conducted a total of 38 courses and exchange activities throughout the year, providing 114 hours of professional training. The southern region completed 36 courses and exchange activities, totaling 111 training hours. Course content covered clown performance, musical interaction, medical knowledge, themed workshops, large-group rehearsals, and group counseling.

The annual themed training invited French instructor Christian Tétard to lead the five-day workshop “The Clown, His State, and Conflict….” Through improvisation, physical training, and creative exercises, the workshop deepened the team’s understanding of the clown state, emotional flow, and real-time interaction.

As of 2025, the association had developed 8 certified internal clown coach candidates, gradually establishing mechanisms for professional succession and talent development.

Advocacy and Outreach

Dr. Red Nose take the value of medical clowning and arts-based healing beyond hospitals, helping more people understand that in addition to caring for the body, emotional support and human companionship are equally important forces in care.
