In 2025, Dr. Red Nose continued visiting 15 partner hospitals and 3 care institutions across Taiwan. Through more than 1,600 healing missions and 20,000 smile prescriptions, we accompanied many patients, families, and healthcare workers through vulnerable moments in their medical journeys.

Behind every visit to the field are many people who contribute quietly—from the professional development of Medical Clowns and the team’s ongoing learning, to the public-interest partners and donors who support the organization’s operations. Together, they build the enduring power of accompaniment that makes this work possible over the long term.

01

About Dr. Red Nose

In 2015, founder Ma Chao-Chi and Luc Ducros (Ku Le-Hsi) put on their makeup, picked up their instruments, and entered the wards of National Taiwan University Children’s Hospital for the first time. That day marked the beginning of Dr. Red Nose’s presence in Taiwan’s healthcare system.

Dr. Red Nose is Taiwan’s only Medical Clown organization. We bring together performing artists who have received professional training in healthcare settings and enter medical and care institutions. Through humorous improvisational interaction, we accompany patients, families, and healthcare workers through stressful and vulnerable moments, bringing them laughter and healing.

Professionalism
Continuously advancing our artistic and Medical Clown expertise to maintain high-quality, trustworthy services.
Respect
Meeting one another with equality and sincerity, while safeguarding each person’s dignity and choices during vulnerable moments.
Integrity
Upholding transparent, honest, and responsible organizational operations, and cherishing the trust of the public.
Healing
We believe that humor, play, and art have the power to connect people, accompanying them through difficult moments.

02

Medical Clown

Medical Clowns are performing artists who have received professional training. Our work is not limited to performances; through clown arts, humorous improvisational interaction, music, and games, we accompany patients, families, and healthcare workers, providing non-pharmacological psychosocial support.

Pairs of two
Entering hospital wards as pairs, we build more flexible and nuanced interactive companionship through real-time responses and seamless collaboration.
Regular frequency
Stable, long-term regular tours allow patients, families, and healthcare workers to develop familiarity and trusting relationships.
Improvisational interaction
We improvise according to the situation, age-related needs, and emotional atmosphere on site, responding to the genuine needs of each person we serve in the moment.

03

Talent Development

Professionalism is our strongest foundation. Every Dr. Red Nose member must undergo extensive professional performance training, study medical knowledge, and complete internships in healthcare settings. They must also follow professional standards and ethical guidelines for Medical Clowns before officially entering hospital wards to serve.

In 2025, the northern region held a total of 38 courses and exchange activities throughout the year, accumulating 114 hours of professional training. The southern region completed 36 courses and exchange activities, accumulating 111 training hours. Course content covered clown performance, musical interaction, medical knowledge, themed workshops, full-team rehearsals, and group counseling.

The annual themed intensive training invited French instructor Christian Tétard to lead the five-day workshop “The Clown, His State and Conflict….” Through improvisational performance, physical training, and creative exercises, the workshop deepened the team’s understanding of the clown state, emotional flow, and real-time interaction.

As of 2025, the association had trained 8 certified internal clown-coach candidates, gradually establishing mechanisms for professional succession and talent development.

04

Advocacy and Outreach

Dr. Red Nose brings its work beyond hospitals, promoting the value of Medical Clowns and healing through the arts, so that more people understand that beyond caring for the body in medical treatment, emotional support and human companionship are equally important forces in care.

Smile Tour
Children’s Day Tour
Completed 36 performances at 22 hospitals across Taiwan, extending laughter from hospital wards to more corners of more hospitals.
Christmas Charity Gift Boxes
The “Imaginations United” project collected 800 donated gift packages, which Dr. Red Nose delivered to hospitals and care settings.
Helping Professionals Workshop
The tour across Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung attracted 45 participants from diverse professional fields.

In educational outreach, 34 lectures were held in 2025, reaching more than 3,700 people in total. Partner organizations included 33 schools, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and public institutions.

Important Painting and Safety Guidelines

Because the shaker eggs are gifts for children in hospitals, creators must follow the principles of “safety and waterproofing” while creating them. Let’s use the safest love to protect the health of every child in the hospital:

Please use safe, non-toxic, odorless, waterproof acrylic paint or acrylic markers for painting. Once dry, acrylic paint provides good water resistance and wear resistance, making it the most recommended medium for this event. Please avoid watercolors, colored pencils, crayons, pastels, and other media that easily fade or shed powder, as well as coatings containing volatile chemical ingredients such as spray paint, paint, and nail polish.

  • Please avoid attaching three-dimensional decorations such as glitter, rhinestones, pom-poms, beads, or fabric, which could come off during use and compromise children’s safety. Complete the work using a flat painting style. Before returning it, be sure the paint is “completely dry” to prevent the shaker eggs from sticking to one another and damaging the designs when packed and shipped.

  • The painting should be warm, friendly, and suitable for children to enjoy. You are welcome to creatively incorporate Dr. Red Nose’s signature “red nose” into the design, so that every shaker egg becomes a little messenger of joy and blessings.[[[DESIGNHU_TOKEN_000331]]]

We recommend using warm Christmas imagery as the main theme (for example: Christmas trees, snowmen, candy canes, sparkling stars, and so on). You are also welcome to unleash your creativity and give the characters Dr. Red Nose’s signature red nose.

Other Important Information

Once the painted work for this event is completed and returned, it is deemed to agree that the Red Nose Care Clown Association may use it for hospital ward services, charitable activities, exhibitions, displays, and related promotional records. You also agree that the association may use event photographs and images of the works in event records, outcome sharing, social media, the official website, and related charitable promotions, without further notice or payment of compensation.

  • To protect children’s safety and maintain event quality, if a work does not meet the event guidelines (such as being insufficiently dry, fading, using unsuitable materials, or having inappropriate content), the association may decide not to distribute it and reserves the right to determine subsequent handling.

  • Please do not put names, phone numbers, addresses, email addresses, or other personally identifiable information on the work, to protect the privacy of both the children and participants.

  • For any matters not covered by these guidelines, the Red Nose Care Clown Association reserves the right to adjust or amend the event content and the right of final interpretation.

2026 Healthcare Clowning International Meeting

Global Medical Clown Conference Sharing Session
Building the Future of Healthcare Together

Shaping the future of healthcare together

In March 2026, the Red Nose Care Clown Association brought Taiwan’s local experience to Lausanne, Switzerland, to participate in the triennial international event—the HCIM Global Medical Clown Conference. Connecting with more than 140 professional organizations and over 650 artists and field experts from more than 40 countries around the world, Medical Clowning (Healthcare Clown) has gone beyond being merely a charitable role. It is now a highly professional, scientifically evidenced partner in clinical healthcare.

This session will share the international perspectives from the 2026 HCIM conference, analyze local healthcare companionship service models, and draw on diverse international clinical collaboration experiences across disciplines. We will explore the approaches used by Medical Clowns in diverse clinical settings and examine the “brain science” behind humor interventions through physiological psychology and neuroscience mechanisms. We will also share an overview of the development of Medical Clown organizations worldwide, the fundraising practices of Taiwan’s Dr. Red Nose, and the possibilities between sustainable operations and social practice.

Smiles take time to grow, and professionalism requires sustainability. Join us in piecing together this global resource map that keeps smiles going, and co-create the future of holistic healthcare in Taiwan.

“Medical Clown enter hospitals in pairs twice a week, on a long-term and uninterrupted basis, to provide customized improvisational performances for patients, their families, and medical staff.” This sentence simply describes the work of Medical Clown. But I believe everyone knows that hospitals are highly stressful places. In hospitals, medical staff, patients, and family members are all under pressure and tension due to different circumstances. Therefore, many friends ask us whether having Medical Clown appear directly inside hospitals and perform in various corners might interfere with the work being carried out in the hospital or affect patients’ rest. So this time, we would like to share with everyone how Medical Clown perform their duties in this regard.

The public’s impression of “clowns” is often associated with comedy and humor. But in the work of Dr. Red Nose, the meaning of “laughter” goes far deeper than what is visible on the surface. It is not merely an emotional response, but also a finely tuned physiological and psychological mechanism.

Ten years of laughter is not a miracle; it is built by every person who walks into the wards each week.
